Saddle up your horses …

If you’ve ever been to the Shipshewana Auction Friday Horse Sale, you’ve probably seen Jerry and Sandy Harper’s horse tack sale booth situated between the livestock barn and the Shipshewana Auction Restaurant.

The retired couple has been selling here consistently for 10 years. Every Friday, except in extreme weather conditions, they make the 1 hour, 15 minute drive from their home in Burlington, Michigan to offer merchandise and a friendly greeting to horse enthusiasts.

As I strolled through their booth, I found many American made tack items, from new and used custom-made saddles to harness leather from Texas. One wall displays a large variety of colorful harnesses and leads while another section offers a great selection of spurs. In addition to practical tack items you can find unique items such as cell phone holders, jewelry (including Arizona made copper bracelets and horse hair bracelets), horse hair key chains and horse-themed greeting cards.

As I was leaving, I noticed a sign for sale: “If you ain’t never had a problem, yer probably already dead.”

Now that I think about it, it seems to me, “If you ain’t never found the tack item you were looking for, yer probably not looking in the Harper’s tack booth!”

So stop in if you get a chance. The Harpers would love to see you!
